Notes from Nicola Thomas
Photography: images from the everyday
note: currently, we are still able to go out for exercise and for essential shopping. During one of these excursions
- photographic images could be taken of things/objects that they find visually interesting. Think of Richard Wentworth. e.g. chair sculpture
- these images/objects could be filmed also.
Photography: abstract photography
- take abstract images of surrounding objects and or environment.
- could incorporate the use of smart phone and app filters to further alter the image.
- images could also be filmed
Performance
- live performances or performance lectures
- could be recorded or streamed live e.g. via instagram
- influenced many a performance artist: Bob Dylan Subterranean Homesick Blues, 1965
Collage / Assemblage
- collage could be a collection of things/objects placed together – it doesn’t have to be all paper based.
- again, the results could be photographed or filmed.
- e.g. students have done projects where they take a selfie of themselves each morning and have collaged that into a film
Audio
most of us have smart phones and apps to record sound/audio/voice memos on their phone
- field recordings – record everyday sounds and put together to make an audio collage/composition/mix
- as well as mobile phone audio editing apps there are also online audio editing apps such as Audacity Audio Editor Online, Apowersoft Free Online Audio Editor, Bear Audio Tool etc.
Appropriation
- appropriate sound, images, and film from the internet
- again, can be used to create collages: audio, visual etc.
Writing
- write on art
- use writing to make art
- use writing to make art and others (those who read the writing) make art also. Think Yoko Ono’s book Grapefruit or Fluxus event scores
- could use Twitter
